Skin remodeling is the key to keeping hair's health. Skin and scalp renewal starts with the hair follicles. The body's signal for skin remodeling and renewal first enlarge the hair follicles. New skin cells arise from the hair follicle and migrate into the surrounding skin area.
This effect was first noted about 50 years ago during World War II. It was observed, in patients with severe burns and burn scars, that if hair follicles were growing at the edge of the burned skin, then this was an excellent prognosis for healing of the burn. If the follicles were enlarging, the healing was poor and the burn scars remained.
Later, in 1985, we found that SRCPs (Skin Remodeling Copper Peptides) not only stimulated healing of wounds but also increased the size of the hair follicles near the wounds. The Copper-Peptides were not hair growth stimulators, per se, but did increase the hair follicle size and vitality.
In recent years, it has been established that genetic modifications in mice that stimulate skin remodeling also increase hair follicle size.1 Genes such as sonic hedgehog, catinin, Wnt and Noggin all enhance hair follicles then produce remodeling.2
The following diagram is based on GHK-copper(II) actions. See Copper Peptide Regeneration for references. Folligen acts similarly but is composed less fragile copper peptides that also have a better adherence to the skin. Large hair follicles that grow think hair are part of the entire system that rebuild skin.

At age 15, your scalp is thick and your hair follicles have a rich blood supply (red and blue) and are surrounded by many subcutaneous fat cells (yellow balls) that are felt to enhance the health of the hair follicles. This produces large hair follicles that produce thick shafts of hair.
Center Diagram: As you age and DHT effects set in, your scalp thins, its blood supply is diminished, and the layer of fat cells narrows. This provide less support and nutrition for your hair follicles. This produces smaller follicles that produce thin hair shafts.
Right Diagram: Biologically effective copper peptides help reverse many of these effects. They help re-thicken your scalp, improve the scalp's blood supply, and rebuild subcutaneous fat. This produces a larger follicle that produces thicker hair shafts.
Dr. Pickart invented the copper peptide technology that produced Tricomin and GraftCyte while at ProCyte Corporation, which sells the latter two products. Both GraftCyte for improving the establishment of hair transplants, and Tricomin for stimulating hair growth, have demonstrated efficacy clinical studies.
Many of our customers say that Folligen alone has sufficiently solved their hair problems.
| Changes Assoiciated with Hair Thinning and Loss | Solutions | Comments |
| 1. DHT (Dihydrotestosterone) accumulation damages follicles | Using 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors to block DHT production / The drug Propecia and natural copper ions in SRCPs are both potent inhibitors of DHT | |
| 2. Follicle miniaturization producing thin hair | SRCPs increase follicle size and this prdouces thicker hair | SRCPs have greater action than Minoxidil on follicle enlargement |
| 3. The follicle cycle of Anagen (growing) to Telogen (dormant) shortens with age producing smaller follicles | SRCPs lengthen the cycle similar to that of a younger person | |
| 4. Inadequate blood vessels to carry nutrients to follicles | SRCPs are angiogenic and help the production of new capillaries | |
| 5. Inflammation around follicles causing damage | SRCPs are as potent anti-inflammatories as cortisone (and other corticosteroids) but do not have the skin damaging actions of cortisone. SRCPs block damage by interleukin-1 and TGF-beta-1 | |
| 6. The skin's subcutaneous fat layer diminishes with age | Subcutaneous fat cells are associated with large, healthy hair follicles and are postulated to provide nutritional support to the follicles / SRCPs increase the depth of the subcutaneous fat cell layer | |
| 7. Scalp damage from relaxers, perms, coloring chemicals, and excessive heat from blow dryers and hot oil treatments reduces hair growth | SRCPs help repair scalp damage | |
| 8. Hair becomes gray with age | SRCPs supply copper that tyrosinase needs to produce melanin | This sometimes, but not always, can restore color to the hair |
Within the past year many of our customers have reported that the combination of Folligen's Copper-Peptides and Emu Oil often produce drastic reductions in hair loss and increased hair growth. Although Emu Oil is used by many for reducing hair loss in various parts of the world, in the USA FDA regulations discourage the marketing of Emu Oil for hair restoration. Recently, Dr. Michael Holick (Boston University Medical Center) reported a clinical study that found Emu Oil accelerated skin regeneration and also stimulated hair growth. He wrote, "The hair follicles were more robust, the skin thickness was remarkably increased...Also, we discovered in the same test that over 80 percent of hair follicles that had been 'asleep' were awakened, and began growing hair".
